Caring for Seagrass Baskets

Seagrass is a natural, durable material that becomes more beautiful as it ages. Proper storage and basic maintenance will keep your baskets functional and lovely for years.

Regular Care

Dust seagrass baskets regularly with a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. These natural fibers collect dust but are easy to maintain. Avoid excessive moisture and direct sunlight, which can weaken fibers and cause fading or brittleness. Use baskets actively for storage and display—the natural oils from handling help keep seagrass supple and prevents the fibers from becoming overly dry and fragile.

Cleaning

For general cleaning, gently vacuum using an upholstery attachment or wipe with a dry cloth. If seagrass becomes soiled, a barely damp cloth works well—avoid soaking or submerging. For stubborn marks, a cloth slightly dampened with a mix of cool water and a drop of mild detergent can be used, followed immediately by drying with a clean cloth. Allow the basket to air dry completely in a well-ventilated space.

Preventing Damage

Keep baskets away from direct heat sources, air conditioning vents, and radiators, which cause uneven drying and brittleness. Avoid storing heavy objects that could crush the weave over time. Seagrass can temporarily absorb moisture in humid environments—this is normal and not damage. Allow the basket to return to normal moisture levels naturally as humidity decreases.

Storage Tips

Store baskets in a cool, dry place with moderate humidity. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture and can cause mold or mildew. Instead, store in open air or wrapped loosely in breathable cloth. Keep baskets in their intended shape—storing them crushed or bent can permanently weaken the weave structure. Properly stored seagrass baskets maintain their shape and function for many years.

Repair and Restoration

Minor fraying or loose strands are normal with natural materials and add character. Stray ends can be carefully trimmed or tucked back into the weave. Broken strands or sections of damaged weave may be rewoven by a skilled craftsperson. Contact us for guidance on whether your basket can be professionally restored or repaired.
