Caring for Handmade Ceramics
Each ceramic piece is individual and durable. With basic care, your handmade mugs, bowls, and vases will remain beautiful and functional for generations, developing patina and character with use.
Daily Use
Handmade ceramics are made to be used. Dishwasher safety depends on the glaze and firing—when in doubt, hand wash. Handle with reasonable care to avoid dropping, but remember that these pieces are sturdier than they appear. Chips and imperfections add to the handmade quality and are part of the piece's story. Using your ceramics regularly keeps them part of your daily life and ritual.
Washing and Cleaning
Gentle hand washing in warm soapy water is ideal. Use a soft sponge or cloth and avoid abrasive scrubbers that can wear down glazes. For stuck-on food, soak briefly before washing. Dry promptly and thoroughly to prevent water spots or staining. Most natural glazes can handle warm dishwashers, but hand washing extends the life and beauty of the piece significantly.
Handling Stains and Discoloration
Tea and coffee stains on unglazed or lightly glazed pieces are common and harmless—they develop naturally with use. To minimize staining, rinse and dry promptly after use. For stubborn marks, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently and wiped clean usually works. Avoid bleach-based cleaners, which can damage unglazed clay and certain glazes.
Storage and Display
Display your ceramics on open shelves or in cupboards where air circulates freely. Avoid stacking pieces without protection or displaying them in overly humid environments. Handmade ceramics appreciate being seen and used rather than hidden away. If storing for the season, wrap carefully in cloth to prevent dust accumulation and protect from accidental damage during storage.
Chips and Repairs
Small chips add character and evidence of use. If a chip becomes sharp enough to be uncomfortable or affects functionality, gentle sanding or filing smooths the edge safely. For significant damage, assess whether the piece remains functional and beautiful to you. Many potters embrace repairs as part of the pottery's history. Loomcraft can advise if a piece warrants professional restoration.
