Caring for Beeswax Candles and Oak Serving Boards

Both beeswax candles and white oak boards improve with care and use. These natural materials develop patina and character, becoming more beautiful as they age in your home.

Using Beeswax Candles

Trim the wick to one-quarter inch before each lighting to prevent excessive smoking and promote even burning. Allow the wax to melt fully to the edges on first burning to prevent tunneling and ensure the candle burns evenly. Burn candles in a draft-free area and never leave a lit candle unattended. Beeswax candles emit a subtle honey scent naturally and clean the air as they burn—simply enjoy this benefit without adding fragrance.

Caring for Burning and Storage

Use a wick trimmer or scissors to maintain proper wick length throughout the candle's life. If soot accumulates on the glass or candle surface, gently wipe with a damp cloth when the candle is cool. Store unused candles in a cool place away from direct sunlight and heat, which can soften or discolor the wax. Beeswax has a higher melting point than other waxes and will hold its shape and scent well.

Oak Board Maintenance

Hand wash oak serving boards immediately after use with warm soapy water and a soft sponge. Do not soak or place in the dishwasher, as prolonged moisture causes warping and damage. Dry promptly with a clean cloth. Never use harsh abrasive scrubbers, which damage the wood grain. Wood is porous and will naturally show water marks initially—these fade as the wood adjusts to moisture.

Oiling and Protection

Oil your oak board periodically with food-grade mineral oil or beeswax wood conditioner. Apply oil sparingly with a cloth, working with the grain. Let excess oil absorb for an hour, then buff with a clean cloth. Regular oiling keeps wood from drying out and enhances the natural grain. Oil approximately every three to six months depending on use, or whenever the wood appears dull or dry.

Avoiding Damage

Protect wood from extreme heat by using hot pads or trivets under warm dishes. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade the wood over time. Small cuts and stains develop with use and are part of the board's character. Deep gouges can be gently sanded smooth if desired.
